Mapping Australian Convict Places

This map was compiled to show the spread of convict places. The locations only include those related to the implementation of the British-based judicial system in Australia. This invariably – but not always – involved the management of the 171,000 people known to have been transported from throughout the British Empire to Australian shores. It consequently does not include places associated with colony or local-based systems of criminal management, such as local gaols.
